Smart Tools for Automation

POSTED BY TURTLE & HUGHES INDUSTRIAL CONTROL & AUTOMATION DEPARTMENT BLOG IN PRODUCTS & TECHNOLOGY

To get the job done right, you need the right tools. To get the job done more efficiently, you need smarter tools. When it comes to automation and control systems, having the right tools to configure, price, and manage your products and projects, has become increasingly more important. When it comes to creating an automation project, one such very helpful tool is Rockwell Automation’s Integrated Architecture Builder, or IAB.

IAB is an excellent tool when trying to lay out an integrated project that may involve standard or safety automation controllers, local or remote IO, drives, servos, software, and networks. Systems can be built up manually or through the use of wizards to create simple or sophisticated control systems. IAB can help in the decision making process by allowing you to select between different IO platforms to compare cost and quantities. Multiple controllers can be reviewed and exchanged to see the impact on your layout and bottom line. The same is true of your operator interface choices, Ethernet switches, and variable frequency drives.

IAB can also integrate with other Rockwell and non-Rockwell Automation tools such as ProposalWorks, e-Plan, and Microsoft Visio. Customers who have built up systems in IAB can forward these projects to their Turtle & Hughes product specialist for review and collaboration. Completed architectures can then be transformed into ProposalWorks files or Microsoft Excel spreadsheets where pricing structures and multipliers can be applied.

IAB also allows for the creation of Microsoft Word documents that can be tailored to fit customer templates and used as part of end-customer proposals or supplemental submittal documentation. This documentation could include a system description, network diagrams, network and system parameters, and bills-of-materials.

IAB is a free download from Rockwell Automation. If you’re interested in getting a copy, you can visit the Rockwell Automation website at http://www.rockwellautomation.com/global/support/selection.page. While you’re there, check out some of the other Rockwell Automation product selection tools, such as ProposalWorks. If you have questions about this or any of the other Rockwell Automation tools, contact any member of the Turtle & Hughes Automation Department.
