That sudden equipment malfunction can hobble a crane or house truck, prompting terminal management, maintenance staff, IT departments or procurement managers to race for a solution. More often than not, the faulty part is obsolete.

First, it’s important to ascertain the status of the broken part. Of course, the easiest fix is if the equipment remains in production and is available on the market. You can buy a new replacement unit or have the broken piece repaired or rebuilt.
If a part is out of production, spares may be available in inventory, or a rebuild may be possible. In some cases, however, a part is obsolete, with no extras and no way to rebuild. In that instance, we suggest looking for a new part that can fit into the existing crane or truck.
Depending on the equipment and circumstances, getting it replaced — however that’s achieved — can take anywhere from a matter of days to a few weeks or longer. It depends on the options chosen as well as the product and manufacturer.
To make the process as quick and smooth as possible, we recommend taking photos of the broken part. Pictures are worth a thousand words. Multiple pictures are even better.
If it’s visible, record any information from the product nameplate, including model and serial number, to make it easier to look up the specs. If you know the manufacturer, that’s even better. And while they’re not necessary, drawings of the part from the crane spec book can be helpful.

If a vital part is particularly expensive, you may wonder whether it’s worth replacing it or if it’s time for a new crane. In almost every case, including those involving obsolete equipment, there’s a cost-effective answer that doesn’t require spending millions of dollars on a new crane.
If your port equipment in running well now without need for replacement parts, that’s great news. Eventually, though, parts do wear out and break.
