Turtle & Hughes’ Bridgewater, NJ branch recently hosted 30 high school STEM students from a 10-county area in New Jersey as part of a program run by the Gateway Chamber Workforce-Education Committee, which arranges similar tours for the students to visit three to four business each year.
The students were granted access to many of the departments that comprise the Turtle & Hughes operation as a window-in to potential future career opportunities. Early exposure to real-world job prospects is so important for students, as they develop their study plans and begin to think about their occupational futures; similarly, employers benefit from an early introduction to those who may make up their future workforce.
STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) is a specific area of opportunity for students and a great need for employers, like Turtle & Hughes. A recent report from the United States Department of Commerce Economics and Statistics Administration stated, “STEM occupations are projected to grow by 17.0 percent from 2008 to 2018, compared to 9.8 percent growth for non-STEM occupations.”
As a company rooted in providing exceptional service to our customers in the industrial, commercial, utility and contractor markets, Turtle & Hughes provides power distribution and automation solutions equipment and engineering services for a complex set of projects. Turtle & Hughes recognizes the importance of encouraging newcomers to the STEM field both to the continued growth of our own business, and for scientific innovation, as a whole.
Specifically, in working with programs like this one, Turtle & Hughes can help identify some of the local young adults with a strong interest in STEM and offer them assistance with career path formation, including opportunities to get a foot in the door over the summer months, with the hopes of continuing their employment upon graduation. We are honored to be included in the Gateway Chamber Workforce-Education Committee program, as it is another great source of potential employees, allowing us to open our doors to the engineers of tomorrow.
After half of a day spent with Turtle & Hughes leadership, the students came away with knowledge of different business functions and an introduction to a stable and growing local employer. “Turtle & Hughes did a fantastic job of informing and engaging all of the attendees for their tours. All attendees became enthused and enriched,” said Lynne Crystal, Chair of the Gateway Chamber Workforce-Education Committee.
