Developing Leadership Skills Through Mentoring


January is National Mentoring Month and we know how important mentoring can be for business success. It encourages a sense of loyalty; leads to high employee engagement and retention; improves organizational performance; and increases employee morale, productivity and creativity. It also provides to a high level of personal satisfaction for those lucky enough to be a mentor.

Building Long-Term Mentor Relationships

At Turtle & Hughes, mentoring is often a natural extension of our Management Training Program. Young professionals spend up to two years moving between departments and working closely with seasoned employees. The end result is establishing a long-standing relationship that fits their skills, strengths and interests — with a mentor who will support their professional growth and training for success in the long run.


We have also launched a more formal mentoring program in some targeted offices with a focus on the next generation of leadership.  Mentors and mentees are matched based on career aspirations. Annual goals are established with the mentee’s direct manager. Everyone benefits from adhering to an action plan, which includes setting regular meeting times, establishing monthly goals and conducting quarterly reviews.


Building these mentor relationships are important, especially to millennials, who are now the largest generation in the workforce. According to a 2016 Deloitte Millennial Survey, “Where it exists, mentoring is having a positive impact and six in ten (61 percent) millennials are currently benefiting from having somebody to turn to for advice, or who helps develop their leadership skills.” The survey also confirms what we’ve known all along — that mentorship makes good business sense. “Those (millennials) intending to stay with their organization for more than five years are twice as likely to have a mentor (68 percent) than not (32 percent).”

Giving a Hand Up

Mentorship also promotes diversity, which is why Turtle & Hughes participates in the MTA Small Business Mentoring Program (SBMP) and collaborates with other professionals in our industry. We advise small M/WBE electrical contracting firms on small- to mid-size transit system projects, helping them to save money and avoid costly mistakes. We provide technical services, engineering expertise and equipment for the scheduling, design and installation of fiber and copper communications projects.


With a skillful hand, a good mentor can have a considerable impact on someone just starting out. For the young professional, it means finding someone who can bring out their unique talent and guide them in the right direction.
