Aircraft warning lights act as beacons making tall structures more visible to passing aircraft at night and during inclement weather. They are used as important collision avoidance measures and are critical to air and ground safety.

At The Port of Long Beach, CA, one of the nation’s busiest container ports and a premier gateway for Trans-Pacific Trade, aircraft warning lights are standard on the tall cranes that are used to unload the more than $180 billion worth of goods that move through the docks each year.

The ports are located in one of the nation’s busiest air traffic corridors so the reliability of these lights is a top safety concern. That is why when one port operator wanted a maintenance-free solution that would guard against possible power outages that could affect its aircraft warning lights, they turned to Turtle & Hughes.

Partnering with Cooper Crouse-Hinds, we presented a design-build solution based on the port’s specific needs. The result is a solar powered obstruction light with 20 ultra-high intensity LEDs that operate even when the power is out. The unit is completely self-contained and incorporates a large 12-watt solar module, 7.5A battery and advanced driving circuitry. It offers years of maintenance free operation and meets all ICAO standards for air safety.
