New Jersey-based Catbridge Machinery knows what it takes to be different in the design and manufacturing of converting equipment. When it came time to improve their own machinery, they looked for a like-minded partner to design a solution to optimize their processes.
Catbridge Machinery was struggling with long design-to-build lag times, varying and disparate machine control technologies, deepening spare parts inventory, and expensive remote machine diagnostic architectures. The Turtle & Hughes Automation department developed a Rockwell OEM engagement that helped Catbridge engineers standardize all of their machine control designs around Allen-Bradley Integrated Architecture. Today, all logic control, HMI (human machine interface), drives, motion control/positioning and machine safety are integrated using one automation manufacturer and one standard Ethernet-based network.
Design-to-build times have been reduced, spare parts inventory has been cut in half and remote connectivity keeps Catbridge Machinery connected to any one of their machines around the globe with the click of a mouse.
When FDA Regulations require washing your manufacturing equipment daily, you need to make sure that the computers on the plant floor are rugged enough to withstand the elements. For us, the solution also means keeping manufacturing jobs here in America.
Our customer, a California-based company that provides the fruit that sweetens some of the country’s most recognizable brands of yogurts, needs to systematically replace the computers that run the SAP program on the production line and account for what totes are filled. Operators open the doors frequently to access their computers and then close them to protect the units when not in use. The wear and tear on gaskets and locks has resulted in water vapors entering some enclosures and damaging the PCs.
The Turtle & Hughes branch in Long Beach, CA, has partnered with iTech Company to specify new computers. iTech is based in California and is a worldwide manufacturer of industrial, networking, Marine/Military/Medical grade LCD and panel PC products and has a large U.S. production factory.
The iTEch computer fits into a smaller, compact, waterproof enclosure. The entire unit (including the keyboard) is washable and meets all the customer’s requirements for usability, including: Intel processor, hard drive, Windows 7 Pro, USB and multiple ports.
In the end, what sold the customer was a tough shock resistant screen and the lower price tag, which is 50 percent less than an overseas alternative they were considering.
